Renting on the Upper East Side
The Upper East Side is best known for prewar co-ops along Fifth and Park Avenues, but its eastern half, along First, Second and York Avenues, holds many of Manhattan’s postwar rental towers. The buildings listed under this heading are all managed by Glenwood Management, one of the city’s largest family-owned landlords, and they range from The Pavilion, completed in 1963, to The Marlowe in 1998.
The Fairmont on East 75th Street is the largest with 494 apartments, and The Somerset on York Avenue is the tallest at 37 floors. These are classic Upper East Side doorman buildings, with layouts that tend to be more generous than in new construction and full-time staff on site.
The Second Avenue Subway, which opened stations at 72nd, 86th and 96th Streets in 2017, made the eastern blocks much easier to reach, and the 4, 5 and 6 still run under Lexington Avenue. Carl Schurz Park, John Jay Park and the East River Esplanade are close by. For more buildings nearby, see Yorkville and Carnegie Hill, which are listed separately.
