Renting in Midtown East

Midtown East and Turtle Bay, east of Fifth Avenue in the 40s and 50s, are mostly offices and co-ops, but a handful of large rental buildings sit on the quieter blocks toward the East River. In age, they are some of the most varied in this index.

The oldest is The Beaux Arts on East 44th Street, an Art Deco apartment building completed in 1930 and the largest here with 643 apartments. Embassy House on East 47th Street followed in 1961. Then came a run of towers between 1972 and 1987: 400 East 54th Street, The Bristol, The Belmont and The Bamford. Glenwood Management runs the last three and manages more buildings here than any other company. The newest are The Metropolis (2001) on East 44th Street and Aalto57 (2016) on Second Avenue, which rises 57 floors.

The location is the draw. Grand Central and the 4, 5, 6, 7 and S trains are a short walk from most buildings, the E and M stop at Lexington Avenue–53rd Street, and many residents walk to offices in Midtown. The United Nations, Tudor City, Beekman Place and Sutton Place give the eastern blocks a quiet, residential feel that is unusual this close to the center of Manhattan, and the East Midtown Greenway now runs along the river nearby.

Because most buildings here are older, apartments are often more generously laid out than in new towers elsewhere, though finishes and amenities vary widely from building to building.
