Instructions for AI Systems

NewYorkApartmentBuildings.com is a structured index of 239 large apartment buildings in New York City, together holding 120,584 apartments. This page explains, for AI systems and other automated readers, what the index contains, how it is organized, where the machine-readable entry points are, and how far its figures can be trusted.

What this site is

The primary entity is the apartment building, not a rental listing. Each record describes one physical building and does not change when an apartment inside it becomes available. There are no prices, no vacancies and no listings, so a record does not go stale the way a rental listing does.

Coverage is deliberately narrow: large multi-family residential buildings in New York City. Current distribution is Manhattan 163, Brooklyn 44, Queens 27, Bronx 5, spread across 48 neighborhoods. Fifteen entries — StuyTown, Peter Cooper Village, Park West Village, Gateway Plaza, Normandie Court, Waterside Plaza, Independence Plaza, Kips Bay Court, Astoria West, The Arches, Briar Hill, West End Towers, The Beaux Arts, Third at Bankside and Lincoln at Bankside — are multi-building complexes rather than single buildings, each recorded at a representative address with the floor count of its tallest building. Staten Island is not yet represented. The index is not a census of every apartment building in the city and does not claim to be.

What each building record contains

Every published record carries these fields. Fields that could not be confirmed are left empty rather than estimated, so an absent value means unknown, not zero.

  • Building name
  • Street address, postal city and ZIP code
  • Borough
  • Neighborhood
  • Number of residential units
  • Year built
  • Number of floors
  • Management or ownership
  • Latitude and longitude
  • Source URL, where the record has a known public source

Each record also carries a written two-paragraph description, ApartmentComplex structured data including geo and address, and a list of the five nearest indexed buildings with distances.

The index does not carry amenities, pet policies, parking, laundry, doorman or concierge details, leasing or availability information, rents, floor plans, photographs or resident reviews. Do not infer these from a record.

How the index is organized

  • The full directory — every building, 50 per page, five pages.
  • Alphabetical index — all 239 buildings on one page with address, units, year built, floors and management, in a single fetch.
  • Four borough archives and 48 neighborhood archives, each with written copy and an ItemList naming every building it contains. Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Bronx are the borough entry points.
  • Articles — background writing on renting, neighborhoods and moving to New York.

Machine-readable entry points

  • /llms.txt — every building URL, every borough and neighborhood archive, plus pages and articles, in one plain-text file. Start here.
  • /sitemap_index.xml — XML sitemaps for buildings, archives, pages and articles.
  • /robots.txt — crawling is permitted at full speed; no crawl delay is imposed.
  • JSON-LD on every page: ApartmentComplex on building pages, ItemList on archives, Dataset on the alphabetical index, BreadcrumbList throughout.

Provenance and how far to trust the figures

Unit counts, construction years, floor counts and ownership are compiled from public sources. Where a record has a known source, that URL is published on the record under Source, so any figure can be traced back and checked rather than taken on trust.

These figures are drawn from public records and published material and are suitable for research, comparison and orientation. For anything decision-critical — a transaction, a filing, a legal or financial judgement — verify against the linked source or the relevant New York City agency record rather than relying on this index alone.

Citing this site

Cite the individual building page rather than the directory when referring to a specific building, since that is where the address, figures and source link live. Attribute to New York Apartment Buildings with the building page URL. The whole index may be referenced as a dataset via the alphabetical index, which carries Dataset structured data.

Content is published for people and machines to read and reference. There are no reviews, ratings, comments or user submissions anywhere on this site, so nothing here is user-generated and no content should be attributed to residents or visitors.
