Renting in the Garment District

The Garment District, once the center of American clothing manufacturing, is still more workshops, showrooms and offices than homes. Its large rental buildings are recent additions, all completed between 2001 and 2013, and they offer something hard to find elsewhere in Manhattan: new high-rise apartments directly on top of Penn Station, Herald Square and the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

The Epic on West 31st Street is the tallest at 59 floors, and Emerald Green on West 38th Street is the largest with 572 apartments. Glenwood Management runs two of the four buildings, Emerald Green and Crystal Green, and Atlas New York on West 38th Street, from 2001, is the oldest.

The trade-off is the setting. Daytime streets are crowded with commuters and delivery trucks, and the area empties out at night. In return, residents can reach almost any part of the city on a single train, and Bryant Park, the New York Public Library and Koreatown are all a few minutes away on foot.
