Renting in Battery Park City
Battery Park City is the closest thing Manhattan has to a planned town. It was built on landfill along the Hudson, partly from material excavated for the original World Trade Center, and about a third of its 92 acres is parkland. The state’s Battery Park City Authority owns the land and leases it to developers, which is why the whole neighborhood shares the same esplanade, lawns and playgrounds.
The residential history starts with Gateway Plaza. Opened in 1983 with 1,700 apartments, it was the neighborhood’s first housing and is still by far its largest building. Liberty Court on Rector Place followed in 1987. The north end filled in between 1998 and 2006 with Tribeca Pointe, Tribeca Bridge Tower, Tribeca Park, The Solaire, Tribeca Green and The Verdesian. The Solaire, completed in 2003, was billed as the first green residential high-rise in the United States, and the buildings around it continued that approach.
Life here is quieter and greener than anywhere else downtown. The Hudson River Esplanade, Rockefeller Park, Teardrop Park and Wagner Park are on the doorstep, along with ball fields, playgrounds and the North Cove marina, which is why the area is popular with families. Brookfield Place, with its shops, food hall and market, is close by.
Transit is a short walk east across West Street: the 1, 2, 3, A, C and E at Chambers Street and the World Trade Center, the PATH to New Jersey, and NY Waterway ferries from the Battery Park City terminal. The trade-off is that the neighborhood can feel separated from the rest of Lower Manhattan by the width of West Street.
