Renting in the East Village

The East Village is a neighborhood of tenements, walk-ups and small apartment buildings, with a long history as a center of immigrant life, the arts and the counterculture. Large doorman rental buildings are rare. The one indexed here, Avalon Bowery Place, opened in 2006 at East First Street and the Bowery, part of a wave of new buildings that reshaped the Bowery in the 2000s.

Renters here trade space and amenities for location: St. Marks Place, Tompkins Square Park and many of the city’s best-known bars and restaurants are a short walk away, and the F at Second Avenue and the 6 at Bleecker Street are close. Most apartments in the neighborhood are in walk-ups, so a building with an elevator and doorman is the exception rather than the rule.
